@ carla - LOL - they view fs as a "personal ministry" not as a part of the operation of the kh so no chance on reimbursement locally. However, I have seen some publishers record their mileage used in fs and then claim it as a charitable contribution. I believe the IRS allows that or at least the folks that I know have done it have never been audited. As a taxpayer, that really ticks me off. If you want to waste your time driving around bothering other people, fine but don't ask the government to pay for it!

The Congregation just paid flowers and other expensive for the PO COBE who died two weeks ago?
by life is to short ini have never in my whole life heard of this being done but at my husband's hall they just asked the congregation to pay about $250.00 to help with the cost of the dinner after the memorial and for flowers.. i was a jw for over 45 years and i have never heard of this.
when my parents died who had been jw's for years i felt lucky fortunate to even be able to use the kingdom hall for their memorial.
i am just speechless at them giving money.

I've seen the local congregation provide flowers before. Seems like a nice gesture and hopefully one that they would do for all publishers and not just elders. It sounds like maybe that's not the case. Collecting money for a meal afterwards does seem a little odd. I've been to many of these (both JW and non-JW) and in most cases where it's at a fellowship hall or a private home, my experience has been that people donate food. I've been to a few in restaurants both those are usually very small, family affairs and the patriarch ends up picking up the check (again just what I've experienced).
Question on the flowers for the assembly & SAD. Why didn't your husband turn in a receipt for reimbursement? They would have processed the payment and cut him a check. I used to buy stuff for the hall all the time and was account servant and secretary and have seen plenty of even small expenses reimbursed. I had a cutoff in my mind as to what I'd turn in and what I would donate. However, I've seen people turn in receipts for $5!

Yes, the last seconds of the last days. Just like I wasn't supposed to finish the 1st grade (I started in the fall of 75)!
I remember 3 years ago, a friend of mine is a WT conductor in one of the local congregations. I was riding in the car with him and his wife and he was talking about the WT study he had conducted earlier that day. It was the Sunday before the convention and he said that he forgot to mention how this convention could be the last one we have this side of Armageddon. My response? That's ok, you can do it next year!!
He wasn't too happy with my comment and especially when I mentioned how Jesus said that no one would now the day or hour and at a time no one would expect it, it would come. He just changed the subject.
Maybe I'll ask him this year if he made that comment!!

My son was murdered today
by truman ini have been on this site daily, almost from its beginning, since i left the jws in 2001, but i have been more of a reader than a poster, as you can see from my post count.
i know few here know me, although i know many of you through reading your posts.
maybe it is not right to ask for support, when i generally stay quietly in the background of this forum, but i want only to speak a human misery of the deepest kind.

What's the JW reaction to new 16 page mags????
by diamondiiz inif you've been to the meeting when the letter was read, what was jw reaction????
just curious if it was just another sign that the end is nearer or did any wake up for a second to realize the corporation is downsizing due to costs..

No reaction. No conversation afterwards about it. I think this is one thing in a long line of reductions/cutbacks that no one is concerned about it. I wonder when they're going to drop the public WT and just offer the 16 page awake?

graysome67 - Thanks for posting this and welcome! Look forward to hearing more from you.
Open remarks to Bethel - Why do you insist on making such trivial announcements so dramatically!! Really, you guys are the biggest drama queens in the world. And, do you honestly think you can put out a letter and it remain secret? We've seen this letter in multiple languages about 2 weeks prior to it being officially announced to the congregation. Why keep it confidential? Seems like you could have just put this in the KM.
Even your elders manual was leaked within probably a day of someone receiving it. This must really piss you off!

Will Embracing the Internet lead to Increased Growth for the Watchtower?
by jwfacts inmore important than the reduction in the size of the new magazine is that the watchtower will be actively promoting its website and encouraging people use it to download magazines.
my concern is that this has the potential to lead to an increase in growth for the watchtower.. the door-to-door preaching work has been one of the most inefficient means imaginable to gain converts, and done little more than tie up the time of active jws.
now, by directing people to the internet, witnesses can spread their message at an alarming rate for little cost.. do you feel that this has the potential to lead to a surge in growth of jehovah's witnesses?

It's just a cost saving measure. There's no way that the JWS use of the internet is going to help them over the long term. There are too many ways to invalidate the theology to newcomers that it just won't work. The religion just isn't getting new recruits outside the third world and once that's played out, they will simply fade away over the next 100 years or so.
Either there is a major reformation to suit the needs of the current population or they are doomed to the fringe, or the edge of the fringe because its a fringe religion now. Maybe not to us that have been impacted but to society as a whole, it is.
